Benwell Vallum Crossing stands as a significant Roman archaeological site in western Newcastle, preserving remains of the vallum or ditch that once formed part of Hadrian’s Wall’s defensive system. The site dates to the late Roman period and marks one of the few places where visitors can examine the physical traces of this monumental fortification that stretched across northern Britain.
Now managed by English Heritage, Benwell Vallum Crossing is accessible to the public and offers insight into Roman military engineering and settlement patterns along the frontier. The surviving ditch sections remain visible on the ground, allowing visitors to understand the scale and layout of Roman defensive works. The site forms part of the wider Hadrian’s Wall World Heritage Site, connecting Newcastle to one of the most important archaeological narratives of Roman Britain.
