Byker Map

Byker lies in the eastern reaches of Newcastle, stretching along the northern bank of the River Tyne. The suburb sits between the city centre and the coast, bounded by Walkergate to the south and opening towards Heaton in the north. Transport links include access via the A189 and local bus routes that connect residents to central Newcastle and surrounding communities.

The area is perhaps best known for the Byker Wall, a distinctive housing development built in the 1970s and designed by architect Ralph Erskine. This brutalist landmark stretches along Walkley Road and remains one of the most recognisable residential schemes in the north east. Beyond the Wall, Byker offers riverside walks, local shops and a working-class character that reflects its industrial heritage along the Tyne.
