Victoria Tunnel Map

Victoria Tunnel is a Grade II-listed underground passage that stretches beneath Newcastle’s streets, offering visitors a glimpse into the city’s industrial heritage. Built in the 1830s as a waggonway to transport coal from the mines to the riverside wharfs, the tunnel spans around 1,700 metres and descends up to 27 metres below street level. Today it stands as one of the finest surviving examples of an underground railway system from the early railway age, its brick-lined passages frozen in time and remarkably intact.

Access to Victoria Tunnel is managed by the Ouseburn Trust and operates on an advance booking basis only. Guided tours take visitors deep underground to explore the original waggon tracks, viewing bays, and ventilation shafts that powered this subterranean industrial network. The trust can be reached on +44 191 230 4210, and further details are available at www.ouseburntrust.org.uk/visit-vt. For those interested in Newcastle’s coal-mining past and railway history, Victoria Tunnel provides an authentic experience of how the city’s economy once thrived beneath the surface.
