The River Tyne flows through Newcastle towards the North Sea, forming a natural waterway that has shaped the city’s identity for centuries. The river runs through the heart of the urban landscape, with the city centre sitting on its northern bank and Gateshead across the water to the south. Several bridges cross the Tyne, including the iconic Tyne Bridge and the Millennium Bridge, connecting both sides of the conurbation and making the river a focal point of daily life and commerce.
The Tyne has been central to Newcastle’s development as a port and shipbuilding hub, with the riverbanks once lined with busy yards and docks.
